Critical Viewpoints

A critical look at the current issues of the day.

Sheitlach from India

In response to the numerous questions that have arisen regarding human-hair

sheitelach (wigs) from India and the possibility that the hair may have been used in idolatrous fashion, please be advised that there is not enough direct and factual information available to us at this time to issue a general ban on using such wigs.

Because of the severity of the issur of avoda zara (the ban on idolatry) we advise that human-hair wigs known to come from India should not be used until the matter is clarified further.

However such wigs should not be destroyed.  Our office will continue to monitor the issue, and we will keep you informed as we learn more.
