About the Community

Welcome to the Jewish Community of Chicago!

Our community in Chicago traces its roots back to shortly after 1840 when Jews from the German states started to settle in the Midwest, mainly becoming peddlers and small store owners. The first synagogue was Kehilath Anshe Mayriv, which was founded in 1847.

Today the Chicago Metropolitan area boasts some 319,600 Jews (2020 estimate) making it the city with 5th largest Jewish population in the U.S., and the 7th largest in the world.

The Chicago community includes a plethora of Jewish services and facilities, such as numerous synagogues, Jewish schools, mikvaot, eating establishments (the majority under the cRc hechsher), supermarkets, an EMS service, several social services, free loan and other charities, and much more.

The cRc Community website is presented as a valuable resource for both Chicago Jewish residents and visitors alike. From Community News to “Things to do in Chicago” this is your Jewish Chicago resource.
